Respite Services
- Over 13,000 hours of respite
annually
- 68% served are over the age of 64
- 51% reported an income under $20,000
"I was most pleased and satisfied with the support we received from
the respite program. It also allowed me to have some time away
from twenty-four hour care giving responsibilities. I was able
to do some things for myself and not have to worry. This
reduced stress in my life and I really looked forward to this break.
I am most grateful and appreciative for all the support.

The need for Respite
ARCH National Respite Coalition -
The nation's estimated 50 million family caregivers provide 80% of
long-term care.
New data from AARP shows that the value of uncompensated family care
giving services to the U.S. economy was estimated at $375 billion in
2007, up from $350 billion in 2006 - a $50 billion in crease in just
one year. This amount is more than the total Medicaid spending
in 2007, including both federal and state contributions for both
medical and long-term care ($311 billion), and approaches total
Medicare spending in 2007. Medical Equipment
American businesses lose $17.1 to $33.6 billion annually in lost
productivity costs related to care giving responsibilities.
A study of elderly spousal caregivers (aged 66-96) found that
caregivers who experienced care giving related stress have a 63%
higher mortality rate than non-caregivers of the same age.
Many caregivers may also find themselves in crisis situations due to
job loss, homelessness, substance abuse or their own ill health.
A temporary haven to insure the safety of the person for whom they
provide constant care becomes an absolute necessity. Respite
has been shown to help sustain family caregiver health and
well-being, avoid or delay out-of-home placements, and reduce the
likelihood of abuse or neglect. Medical

Health and medical Equipment Loan Program (H.E.L.P.)
- Over 6,000 served annually
- 61% served are over the age of 64
- 38% reported an income under $10,000
- 71% reported an income less than $20,000
"Thanks for the use of the medical equipment while I was recovering
from my fall. I know that we paid a processing fee for these
items, but the cost was so moderate. What a kind and generous
mission. You must touch many lives in a gentle way while going
through a difficult time."
The need for assistance with health care costs
A recent study by Harvard University researchers found that
every thirty seconds in the United States someone files for
bankruptcy in the aftermath of a serious health problem.

National Coalition on Healthcare - A new survey shows that more than
25 percent said that housing problems resulted from medical debt.
About 1.5 million families lose their homes to foreclosure every
year due to unaffordable medical costs. (Robertson, C.T., et al.
"Get Sick, Get Out: The Medical Causes of Home Mortgage
Foreclosures," Health Matrix, 2008)
Retiring elderly couples will need $250,000 in savings just to
pay for the most basic medical coverage (Fidelity Investments,
Press Release, 06 March 2006). Many experts believe that this
figure is conservative and that $300,000 may be a more realistic
number.
Christmas Stockings
Over 3,000 Christmas stockings delivered annually to the
incarcerated in southwestern Iowa and eastern Nebraska.
"Thank you for caring. For a lot of inmates your care packages
represented the love we so desperately needed while we were unable
to be with our families. Your gift was priceless as you are.
I will always keep that experience and you in my heart and prayers.
May God bless all of you and what you do always.
